Formation and Development of Ahsante Talawa Group
04 May 2026
Ahsante Talawa Group originated as a simple WhatsApp group formed to reconnect and unite former classmates of Matembwe Primary School. This school is located in Matembwe Village, within Njombe District, Njombe Region, Tanzania. The members of this group were students who began their primary education together in the year 2001 and successfully completed their studies in 2007.

The group adopted the name “Ahsante Talawa 2007” as a tribute to their former headteacher, Mr. George Talawa. He played a significant role in shaping their academic journey and personal discipline during their primary school years. Due to his strong support, leadership, and positive influence, the members agreed to honor him by incorporating his name into the identity of the group.

Although the connection among members existed informally after school, the group was officially established on 30th September 2016 through a WhatsApp platform. At this stage, the primary purpose of the group was social cohesion—bringing members together to support one another in both joyful and difficult times.

During happy moments, such as weddings and other celebrations, members contributed and participated actively in supporting one another. Similarly, during difficult times, especially in cases of bereavement involving close relatives of members, the group provided emotional and financial support. This strengthened unity, trust, and a sense of belonging among the members.

As the group matured, the need for a more structured and impactful system emerged. In October 2023, one of the members, Mr. Henrick Kihaka, proposed the transformation of the group into a more formal and financially organized entity. His proposal involved introducing a structured monthly contribution system, where each member would contribute Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) 20,000.

This proposal was accepted and implemented, marking a major turning point in the group’s development. To facilitate this, an official M-Koba account was established through Vodacom services. In addition, a clear constitution was developed to guide the operations, responsibilities, and financial management of the group.

The primary objective of these contributions was to enable the group to invest in various income-generating activities within Njombe, thereby strengthening financial stability and long-term sustainability. The introduction of this system significantly enhanced cooperation, accountability, and organizational structure within the group.

Since then, the group has continued to operate actively, holding at least one official meeting annually to review progress, evaluate financial performance, and plan future initiatives.

At its inception, the group had a total of 23 members. Over time, this number has reduced to 17 active members. Despite this decrease, the group has grown stronger financially and structurally, demonstrating resilience and commitment among its members.

As the group accumulated funds through consistent contributions, members identified an opportunity to expand their financial activities. This led to the establishment of a small internal microfinance system. This system provides loans exclusively to members, enabling them to address personal financial needs and invest in small-scale economic activities.

The microfinance initiative has proven to be a successful and sustainable program. It has strengthened financial discipline, improved economic capacity among members, and continues to grow as a key pillar of the group’s operations.

Today, Ahsante Talawa Group stands as a well-organized, financially stable, and development-oriented community. It continues to uphold its core values of unity, mutual support, trust, and collective progress, while adapting to new opportunities for growth and sustainability.
